It’s one of those so-called “modern professions”, yet online reputation management is a serious industry.

The internet has become such a powerhouse for companies that it is now crucially important for their reputation to be all in one piece. If any Google search finds anything untoward about their business, it can be completely off-putting for potential customers.

For the reputation management consultants that work in this industry, it would be fair to say that no two days are the same. Something else that can be said is that there a lot of misconceptions arising from the industry and through the course of today’s post we will scrutinize these and debunk them for good.

“It’s fine to ignore negative reviews”

This is one of the biggest misconceptions in the online space. Some companies operate under the mandate that there’s nothing wrong with the odd bad review, when this really shouldn’t be the case.

Sure, bad reviews happen, but it’s how companies respond to these in which they can really make a name for themselves. If a potential customer sees that a firm is proactively attempting to resolve someone’s complaints, it’s a good sign that they are at least somewhat trustworthy.

Of course, if the same company has hundreds of negative reviews, it stands to reason that bigger changes need to be made across the business as a whole.

“It’s even more acceptable to write fake reviews”

Once upon the time fake reviews were the complete norm when it came to online reputations. After all, what was stopping a company from publishing a five star review of themselves, and reaping the rewards in the process?

In short, nothing was stopping them. However, the situation has turned on its head now, with review site algorithms savvier than they have ever been in the past. They can quickly detect fake reviews, and prevent them ever being published.

It’s not just about systems, though. Users themselves are becoming smarter in this regard, and will usually realize when a review has been fabricated.

Problems then start to mount when businesses are uncovered for issuing fake reviews of their own services. This results in a complete lack of trust from the industry – and this is an issue which effects can be felt for years.

Fortunately, this isn’t the case. Sure, it can be difficult to fix the company who has been paying for fake five star ratings for years, and has ultimately been caught in the act. However, it can still be done – and that’s just one extreme.

On the whole, most online reputation issues can be resolved. It’s not an overnight process, and on a lot of occasions it involves trying to “push down” results in the Google search listings which are exposing the negative side of a business. However, techniques exist which mean that you can resolve such issues and allow your business to prosper like it should.
